My friend Wende lives on the farm down the road at Big Heart Ranch - a well named place for 10 retired horses. Wende and her family have a big heart, not just for horses, but for everyone they know. This year I have made lots of placemats and napkins for gifts - birthday gifts, thank you gifts, shower and wedding and anniversary gifts. My favorite placemats use flannel for the batting, and are finished by hand stitching the final turn of the binding. Each year our quilt guild tries to do something special to make others aware of the joys of quilting. Members volunteer to set-up displays at local libraries or businesses where our members reside. We also make a donation of a subscription to a quilt magazine to about five libraries on our county. Here’s a simple idea I found in Quiltmaker magazine to use instead of a quilt sleeve on smaller wall hangings. I tried it out on three advent calendars I made for grand nieces and nephews this past Christmas.Fold two 3” squares into triangles by folding in half and in half again. I love the criss-cross coasters that I learned how to make by reading Allsorts blog on typepad. They are the quickest, easiest gifts I've ever made. You need two coordinating fabrics cut in 4.5" strips, a 4" piece of medium weight interfacing and another 4.5" piece for the inner lining. It's all in the folding and layering, a quick stitching, and turning them inside out and you're finished!
