Zeus Jansz 2000 - 2012

We met a most amazing Safe Haven dog ten years ago on the farm of George and Marilee Hejna. Zeus. Described as having no hips, missing a front toe, and a bit of an Alpha,  you may wonder why we even went to see this Black Lab mix. 

At the time Zeus was found, he was a young pup. They said it took him several minutes to find a comfortable way to sit down on his weak hips. Safe Haven took him in about 12 years ago, but without a permanent shelter and no money available for surgery, his future was bleak. A special appeal was sent to members, and money began to come in for Zeus, to have each hip removed, one at a time. Special thanks to George and Marilee and the many volunteers who helped Zeus heal after each surgery. 

Zeus brought us so much love and joy, and was our self-appointed concierge to anyone who stayed in our home. He was my constant companion on many trips to the barn each day and night, and the reason Tom and I both became so involved with Safe Haven. 

There is a painting of Zeus at Safe Haven that Alan Zver donated to the Silent Auction one year. It serves as a reminder of the many dogs, all with their own story, who have found their Forever Homes through the gracious love and care of Safe Haven. We are forever grateful.

Quilting Cats

This quilt is one of my favorite scrappy patterns. It's called Sawtooth Cats. The cats backs and tails and sawtooth border are all paper pieced from tiny scraps. It was a raffle quilt for our local humane society, where our Black Lab, Zeus is from. I asked for volunteers to help put it together, and my dear quilting friends from the Galena Territory pitched in.

We began with a morning paper piecing together, with some of the ladies paper piecing for their first time. Others pitched in to help me with the borders, the sashing, embroidery, binding, and the machine quilting. It turned out so pretty, earning $500 for Safe Haven. It now hangs in the home of a generous friend, another cat lover and supporter of needy cats and dogs, who also helped work on the quilt.

The quilt is now on my Dream List of projects I would like to make for myself. We'll see...

Here's our real cat, Tori, helping me hand quilt "Trail Ride Dreams," a quilt I made for my niece Katie's college graduation from Loyola in Baltimore. I get to spend a week with Katie every summer on a week long trail ride in Missouri.

Safe Haven Humane Society

Here is a photo that appeared in our little monthly newspaper. It was an article about Safe Haven, our local humane society where we found our Black Lab, Zeus, and Tom is currently serving as president. The big horse, is Doc, the little one, Spandangles, and the cat trying to escape the photo is Tori - an interesting story by herself!

My Sewing Room

I've sewn in many different basements, corners and rooms over the years, but the space I now share with our computer my favorite. I'm often joined by our Black Lab, Zeus, and (above him) our interesting feral cat, Tori.
My view out the window is so beautiful, and my excuse for not getting much done! You can see part of the horse trail in our valley, which is "greenspace" for hikers and horseback riders.
