The fall presentation of grants by the steering committee of the Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund for Literacy will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in May Watts Elementary School, 800 Whispering Hill Road, Naperville. The Nicarico Fund, which is administered by the Naperville Education Foundation, was established in 1995 to increase the general understanding and teaching of literacy and to honor in a positive way the memory of Jeanine Nicarico, a Naperville fifth grader who was slain in 1983. Using donated funding, the Nicarico Fund steering committee awards grants twice yearly to educators who have submitted outstanding proposals for projects that will enhance teachers' abilities as effective instructors of literacy (reading, writing, speaking).
The steering committee includes Naperville educators, community representatives and members of Jeanine's family.

Slated to receive grants during the reception are faculty members representing three schools in Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and one school in Indian Prairie Community Unit School District 204. The fall Nicarico Literacy Grant recipients will be first grade teachers Renae Brooks, Carol Latina and Diana Peck of River Woods Elementary School; Instructional Coordinator Ruth Feightner and Reading Specialist Rosalie Hoffman of Ellsworth Elementary School; third grade teachers Amy Dean, Cindy Husar, PhyllisIrby, Dave McMurtrie and Marlene Ustian of Ranch View Elementary School; and fourth grade teachers Tracy Benyo and Allison Rice of May Watts Elementary School.
